My Pregnancy DESTROYED My Skin — This Unexpected Fix Finally Faded the Postpartum Melasma

By Kassandra Hamilton | Aug 18, 2025 | 11:21 am EST

I never imagined pregnancy would leave my skin looking like this.

They call it the pregnancy mask — but mine felt more like a permanent stain.

Dark patches took over my forehead, cheeks, and upper lip.

And no matter what I tried… nothing worked.

Doctors said it would fade.

Strangers told me to be patient.

But every mirror, every photo, every sunny day said otherwise.

I felt stuck — ugly, invisible, and alone.

Until I found something that finally made sense

…and finally worked.

Hey, my name is Lina and I been dealing with the postpartum melasma, also known as pregnancy mask.

If you’re not familiar, the mask of pregnancy or pregnancy mask is hyperpigmentation that occurs on the face.

It appeared during my second pregnancy and it was horrendous.

My forehead looked like sandpaper

My upper lip looked like I had a mustache

My cheeks had spots that straight up looked like I was dirty

My postpartum face looked like a damn raccoon.

It was so embarrassing.

I hated to look at it.

It was a mess.

I went to my OB and she said sometimes it happens after pregnancy and that usually it fades away.

Well it didn’t fade!

And every time I went outside and it was sunny, it would get even worse.

I’ve tried so many OTC products

✖️ Vitamin C serums

✖️ $200 creams

✖️ Retinoids

✖️ Random “brightening” creams from TikTok

NOTHING WORKED.

The patches didn’t budge at all.

My dermatologist prescribed me some compounds with tretinoin and hydroquinone.

Tretinoin was too harsh and I was afraid to try hydroquinone because I’ve read that it can be cancerous

I just didn’t want to risk it.

Lasers and chemical peels were also scary.

So I was stuck with just SPF and hats.

It made me feel weirdly targeted when nobody I encounter in daily life has it.

No one I knew had melasma.

I felt so alone in this…

Not even the concealer could properly cover it.

And I hated wearing makeup so much.

I felt ugly.

And in the end almost depressed.

(Picture of how my upper lip looked)

This disease is devastating and controlling.

I couldn’t fully do activities with my kids because of melasma.

If I couldn’t partake, my husband had to step in.

I felt like I was missing out on life.

It was HORRIBLE.

And if you’re still reading this, I want you to know something:

I eventually found what was causing it and because of that I was able to fix it!

Finally… something that made sense

One evening, during the usual research about skin care and ways to fade my melasma

I watched this video from a dermatologist

Who explained what causes postpartum melasma

Which was interesting as everyone I watched was talking about melasma in general.

I can't remember the video title

But what the dermatologist said made total sense.

She explained what triggers melasma during pregnancy and how exactly it appears.

And how she explained it finally clicked.

She said our skin is like a factory on 3 levels:

So during pregnancy, hormones spike like crazy.

And in some parts of the skin, they are like an earthquake for these factories.

So they shake these factories up and everything goes haywire.

🚚 And the delivery floor isn’t renewing the cells anymore.

💧 The quality control level isn’t calming the skin and inflammation makes everything worse.

🏗️ The production level produces way more pigment than needed.

Because of all this, old and dark pigmented cells get piled up and stuck at the upper level of the skin.

And creates those dark patches we call melasma.

(Picture of how my forehead looked)

But what the dermatologist emphasized a lot was...

That if left untreated

It would get worse and worse.

Making it harder to fade.

And I've noticed that

Even though I apply SPF daily multiple times per day

It slowly gets darker and darker

Especially during summer.

The Derm went on and recommended the lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap from Scentric Glow.

She said it was the product that she saw the best results with on her patients.

I was skeptical about it, but…

She explained how each ingredient works and how it fixes the ‘factory’.

She said that it contains kojic acid and glutathione to stop the overactive production of melanin.

Turmeric, Vitamin E and Olive oil to cool down the inflammation.

And Retinol, vitamin C and sodium chloride to restart the cell renewal process.

Also for hydration she said it contains glycerin, shea butter and hyaluronic acid.

And collagen too, which supports skin elasticity and firmness.

What she also mentioned is

Because it’s a soap bar

It exfoliates the top layer of the skin while the ingredients penetrate.

She said the combo with all these natural ingredients and the soap format

Is the reason why it works so well.

The derm really emphasized that the whole formula is specifically made for melasma triggered by pregnancy.

And that she is recommending to all her patients who deal with it and they see amazing results.

(Patient of the derm using lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap)

Everything made sense but I was still skeptical about it.

So I started to research this specific lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap and I found a lot of people raving about it.

Below are some of the feedback I found on various sources about the lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap by Scentric Glow:

UPDATE: 7 WEEKS LATER AND IM STILL SEEING IMPROVEMENT. I was skeptical to say the least. I've tried so many things to work on my melasma only to be disappointed. For the first 2 weeks of using it I didn't notice much change, but stuck with it. By week 3, I started to see some lighting. I'm now on week 4 and I couldn't be happier. Keep with it! It WORKS!

I had terrible melasma from pregnancy all over my face, but especially over my upper lip. It was so embarrassing because it really looked like a mustache. While this turmeric and kojic acid soap hasn’t immediately removed those spots (I never expected that) it’s has helped SO MUCH! I tried several products - many of which were more expensive - but this one works the best. HANDS DOWN. Slowly, I’ve seen the spots fade. I’m less embarrassed and eager to see how much more it improves. Plus, this products is affordable! I plan to continue using this and would recommend it to anyone! The picture is embarrassing, but it shows that it works!

WORKS WONDERS!

I read the reviews and decided to give this a try to treat my melasma, which there is not many medical treatments for. Melasma is dark skin on the face, typically around the mouth and develops with pregnancy. I have tried prescription strength bleaches and creams and nothing worked. I used SPF 100 on my face and stopped going outside without a hat. I have a lot of freckles and previous sun damage also. THIS PRODUCT WORKS!!! Pics above were taken 12/18/20 and 2/16/21. Less than 2 months using this product and I could see a noticeable difference. I washed with it twice daily. I had no burning sensation or peeling of skin. Give this try, you will not be disappointed!

Seeing all that, I decided to try it.

Especially because this brand had a 90 day guarantee.

Which meant that if I didn’t see any results in the first 90 days or if it irritated me or I just didn’t like it

I would just have to write them an email and they would refund me the whole amount.

That was really important because I’ve wasted so much money on products that didn’t work for me.

It was the peace of mind I needed

Which allowed me to give it a try.

I ordered 3 soaps and got 6 more for free.

Because I was really serious about fixing my face.

Plus if it didn’t work in the first 3 months, I would just get my money back.

Using the soap bar was super simple.

1️⃣ I just washed my whole face morning and night

2️⃣ Let it sit for about 60 seconds.

3️⃣ Then rinse it off.

The ease of use was a big plus as my time is extremely limited.

I haven’t seen any changes the first week.

But by the end of the second week

The edges of my melasma ‘stache started to slowly fade.

By the end of the first month

My forehead edges soften.

By month 2 I could already see an improvement of my whole face.

And by month 4 is where I’ve seen the biggest changes.

I especially noticed it as I started to go out without makeup.

My mom even complimented on how my skin was looking lately.

Right now I’m on month 6 using the lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap

And I honestly can say

That derm was right!

It cleared my face so much.

The mustache is pretty much gone.

I still have a few small spots on my forehead and cheeks.

But right now I just ordered another 6 soaps.

And I’m convinced that with consistency it will completely fade my melasma.

But more importantly...

It gave me my face and life back.

I’m not that crazy about sun avoidance anymore.

I still wear SPF daily, but that’s mandatory anyway for youthful skin.

But I’m out playing with my kids.

I don’t have to always wear makeup when I go out.

I’m not depressed about it anymore.

It just took a huge mental burden off me.

And I am back to loving myself :)

So this is my review of the Scentric Glow lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap.

I wrote this blog post so other moms like me can finally find relief from this horrible condition.

Melasma truly controlled my life and made me miserable.

But I’m so glad I found the lemon turmeric & kojic acid soap from Scentric Glow.

I didn’t expect much, but after a week I could actually think straight again. My focus came back, my energy felt more stable, and I’m finally sleeping through the night. It’s the first thing that’s actually worked without making me feel wired or weird.

I love this soap! I was skeptical at first as I have tried a few others. I have used this soap for 2 months and I have great results. I have the pregnancy mask and it has diminished quite a bit. And my color of my skin looks much brighter and youthful!
